Winter is coming. While we brace for the first snowfall in Boston, city officials and the Public Works team have shared their winter preparation plans and resources available for Bostonians.

The Public Works Department has amassed 44,000 tons of salt to treat city streets + 175 pieces of in-house snow clearing equipment, with an additional 800 ready to call in during larger storms.

This year, two Boston-based minority-owned businesses will assist public works during snow and ice control operations by clearing city-owned stairways and footpaths. The three-year contracts were awarded to Roxbury-owned A & M Home Services + Mass Trucking.

Residents can sign up to receive AlertBoston notifications by phone, text, or email in the event of a snow emergency.

Find more safety tips, including snow clearing timing, where to park in a snow emergency, heating center locations, and emergency home tips on the city website.
