What you need to know about the Red Line closure

The MBTA is shutting down parts of the Red Line for 16 days in October for repairs. Here’s your guide to navigating the shut down.

Another year, another MBTA shutdown. This October, service on parts of the Red Line will be shut down for 16 days from Saturday, Oct. 14-Sunday, Oct. 29.

During this time, repairs will be made to 5+ miles of tracks in an effort to alleviate 28 speed restrictions. Teams will also complete other tasks, including painting, repairing lights, and improving accessibility. The shutdown will cost the T an estimated $12.2 million in lost revenue + fees, not including the price tag for the actual repairs.

Impacted tracks

  • The Ashmont Branch trains and Mattapan Line trolleys, totaling 11 stations.

Transportation alternatives

  • Free shuttle buses will replace train and trolley service south of JFK/UMass Station.
  • The shuttles will be wheelchair-accessible + scheduled for every 5-6 minutes for peak hours and every 10-15 minutes at off-peak times.
