It’s easy being green in Boston, just ask the Celtics or look to Fenway Park.
More specifically, eco-friendly efforts in Boston + Massachusetts are putting us on the map. Numerous polls have been released this year and they all point to one thing: Our local strive to be sustainable is paying off.
Boston in the rankings
Boston was ranked the No. 24 most eco-friendly city in the US by WalletHub, an online financial service. The study looked at the overall environment, transportation options, energy sources, and lifestyle + policy to determine the ranking. In those categories, Boston’s environment was nationally ranked at No. 11, and No. 10 for transportation options.
Speaking of transportation, Boston earned the No. 8 ranking for top eco-friendly cities for car-free transit by Realtor.com. Cambridge came in at No. 2, followed by Brookline at No. 3, and Somerville at No. 7.
“With nearly 58% of locals commuting without a car, Boston shows that older cities can still lead on modern mobility.” — Realtor.com.
All of these combined high rankings contributed to Massachusetts being named the No. 8 most eco-friendly state in the US. This survey notes our state’s environment and climate change efforts are in the national top 10.
Bostonians on the ground
The city is planning to release its 2030 Climate Action Plan this fall which will detail the roadmap for 2026-2030. In case you missed it, a Climate Change Council was created in October 2024. They are tasked with creating goals for this roadmap that align towards meeting the ultimate goal: Carbon neutral by 2050.
In the meantime, there are plenty of ways to get involved with eco-friendly fun. The city hosts urban wild cleanups frequently + we have an entire guide dedicated to joining our evergrowing volunteer community.
