Boston in 2023 is great, but if we said we’d never dreamed about living during the heyday of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll, we’d be lying.
If you can relate, then we’re going to let you in on a little secret: Thanks to “Million Dollar Quartet,” The Music Hall’s upcoming musical production with Ogunquit Playhouse, you actually can time-travel back to Memphis, TN and experience music history. 👀
Four legends, one recording studio
Legendary Memphis recording studio Sun Studio opened its doors in 1950, and quickly became known as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll — Elvis Presley even recorded his first single, “That’s All Right” at Sun Studio in 1954. Two years later, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins gathered in the same studio for a night that music critics now call the greatest jam session of all time.

About the show
“Million Dollar Quartet” brings that legendary night to life. Attendees can enjoy live renditions of rock ‘n’ roll hits (think: “Hound Dog,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog,” and more). And that’s not all — thanks to stunning, period-accurate costumes, an extraordinary set, and, of course, toe-tapping, hip-shaking tunes, we bet you’ll feel like you’re right there in Sun Studio, too. (Bonus points if you wear your blue suede shoes.)
Previews and opening night (read: the best prices) are happening Wednesday, March 22-Friday, March 24, and the show will run every Wednesday-Sunday through April 9. And since The Music Hall is in Portsmouth, NH (~2 hour drive), why not make a weekend out of it?
Pro tip: Every song is better if you know the words, so pregame with BOStoday’s handy playlist, created in collaboration with The Music Hall. And heads up — it’s basically impossible to listen to this playlist without doing a whole lotta shakin’, soconsider yourself warned. 🎸 *
