May is National Bike Month — an initiative established in 1956 to celebrate the benefits of bicycling. Since Boston is a wicked bikeable city, we’re sharing six local shops where you can purchase a new or used bicycle (or tune up the one you have).

Landry’s Bicycles, Multiple locations
This Massachusetts-based bike company has eight locations, including along Commonwealth Avenue and in Charlestown’s Hood Park. The employee-owned shop has been nationally recognized for supporting bicycle advocacy and offers a wide selection of bikes + bike services.

Bikes Not Bombs, 284 Amory St.
The Jamaica Plain store collects ~5,000 used bicycles and parts from around Greater Boston and New England each year. Browse the inventory online + plan to shop select bikes for up to 25% off throughout Bike Month.

Ferris Wheels Bicycle Shop, 66 South St.
You can find this JP institution next to the Papercuts bookstore. The shop offers bike rentals, repairs, and maintenance services in addition to new bicycles. Pro tip: Make an appointment over the phone before heading over.

Ace Wheelworks, 145 Elm St., Somerville
This one-stop shop for all things cycling in Davis Square has a large selection of bikes, clothing, shoes, and parts. It earned the “Bicycle Retailer Excellence Award” in 2022.

Urban Cycles, 109 Atlantic Ave.
Conveniently located downtown, this eco-conscious bike shop offers rentals in addition to new and used bikes. Pro tip: Sign up to take one of the company’s scenic cycling tours.

Community Bike Supply, 496 Tremont St.
This South End store has been around since 1977, selling new and used bikes, an extensive selection of parts, apparel, and footwear.

Did we miss your neighborhood bike store? Let us know and we’ll add it to our list.

Here are a few of readers’ recommendations:

4130 BYKES, 159 Belgrade Ave., Roslindale
Bayla S. recommends this newly opened Rozzie shop, selling custom built bikes.

Ashmont Cycles, 1977 Dorchester Ave.
This Dorchester shop, suggested by Patty K., offers free estimates for bike repairs + plenty of cycling accessories.
