Ever wonder what Boston’s signature cocktail is all about? Grab a seat. We’re pouring out the story and history behind the classic cocktail — the Ward Eight.

What is it?

Traditionally this mixed drink is made with whiskey, lemon juice, orange juice, and grenadine. Then the drink is served with crushed ice and topped with soda water in a tall glass. It can be garnished with a maraschino cherry and a slice of orange. What’s not to like about that?

Who created this cocktail?

As the story goes, The Ward Eight was invented by Charlie Carter while bartending at the Locke-Ober in the late 1890s.

To celebrate his win to the Eighth Ward district of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Martin Lomasney hosted a party at the popular bar. He asked Charlie to craft several unique drinks that the party would vote on to select their favorite. And Ward Eight was victorious, in more ways than one.

Locke-Ober was one of the oldest restaurants in the country, and it closed its Downtown Crossing location after 137 years in October 2012. The Ward Eight lives on, available at various bars and restaurants across the city.

Ward Eight recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1½ ounces Rye Whiskey
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • ½ ounce orange juice
  • ½ ounce grenadine
Directions: Shake well and then fill with seltzer.

Civic
  • The City of Boston’s Special Municipal Election is today to fill the vacancy in City Council District 8. Polling locations will be open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. View the polling locations.
Traffic
  • MassDOT will be working on the North Washington Street Bridge (aka the Charlestown Bridge) now through Saturday, Aug. 5. Construction will take place during weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to make repairs and updates, including concrete barriers, sidewalks, utility work, and curb work.
Community
  • The Boston Public Health Commission has launched the Community Health Equity Empowerment Fund. It’s a new initiative to award $1 million in grants to local organizations working to advance health equity through prevention, intervention, and response services. The deadline to apply is Friday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m.
Open
  • Nan Xiang Express has opened a location in the Chinatown neighborhood at 52 Beach St. The express-concept eatery offers takeout and delivery, with limited seating inside. (Boston Restaurant Talk)
Award
  • Boston University’s Center for Computing and Data Sciences has been selected as a finalist for “World Building of the Year” by the World Architecture Festival. The “Jenga Building” will compete in the “Higher Education and Research” category. (Boston.com)

  • The Boch Center has released the 2024 Broadway lineup. The season will begin in February with “Annie” and continue with “The Cher Show” + “Hadestown.” Tickets for all three shows are on sale now.
