The momentum behind women’s sports in Boston just keeps growing. Following news of forthcoming women’s soccer and hockey teams, the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour has announced that the FM Global Championship is coming to Norton next year.

Over 140 players will tee off at TPC Boston from Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024 to Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024 for the professional women’s golf competition. Although the Norton course has welcomed 17 PGA Tour events, this will be its first time hosting a professional women’s competition.

The winner will take home $3.5 million, the largest prize on the tour, excluding the majors and tour championship. In comparison, the champ at last year’s US Open in Brookline won just over $3 million. Golf remains a lucrative sport in Massachusetts, driving $2+ billion in direct economic activity last year.

The 2024 FM Global Championship marks the first women’s professional golf tournament in Greater Boston in decades. The Tour previously stopped in Canton in 1997 + the US Women’s Open was held in South Hadley in 2004.

“We are proud and excited to welcome the LPGA Tour back to Massachusetts,” said Gov. Maura Healey. “Sports play an important role in shaping the lives of women, advancing equity and strengthening our communities. The opportunity to see women perform at the highest levels of the game will bring tremendous excitement and enthusiasm.”

Golf fans can add their name to the waitlist to be notified when tickets go on sale.

Meet these scary-good contest winners

BOStoday’s 2023 pumpkin carving contest winners

A pumpkin carved with a portrait of Mayor Wu and the text "WU" and many pumpkins carved to resemble a sea turtle.
Our favorite submissions emphasized Boston pride and tropical twists. | Photos submitted by Matt B. and Neil C.
You’ve scooped the seeds and made masterpieces out of pumpkins. Now it’s time for us to reveal the winners for our Pumpkin Carving Contest — and we couldn’t pick just one. Check out the pumpkins below, including our super official awards for the winning entries.

Best Boston Pride: “Fab-Wu-lous!”

You have to applaud the pun in the title of this entry, but truth be told, it doesn’t even need a name — any Bostonian could recognize this spot-on depiction of Mayor Michelle Wu. Created as a relief-carved tonal portrait, this pumpkin is polished enough sit inside City Hall.

Most Creative: “Honu Halloween”

We weren’t expecting a submission this innovative to wash ashore. This nod to sea turtles gave our contest a surprising tropical twist, which we’re happy to salute — even during sweater weather.

Thank you to everyone who submitted. Happy Halloween, and we’ll see you next year.

Finally, an “I Voted” sticker worthy of your laptop case or reusable water bottle. New Hampshire voters will part the polls next year with participatory stickers designed by fourth graders. If I lived any further north, I’d be holding out for the one that depicts the state of New Hampshire...fishing on a lake.

Don’t be too jealous as you head to the next municipal election on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
