It sounds like science fiction: human organs grown in a lab. But this is the groundbreaking reality at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This technology resulted in the first-ever creation and implantation of a lab-grown organ in a human patient.

And now, organs can be 3D-printed (yes, you read that right). WFIRM researchers start with a specially designed printer that lays down layers of cells, building tissue that eventually becomes organs, signaling the beginning of a revolutionary option for future patients who will need transplants.

Live + work where innovation thrives

If you’re looking to live and work on the leading edge of the healthcare and bioscience industry, you might consider looking South. Winston-Salem is home to one of the nation’s foremost hubs of medical research, spearheaded by WFIRM and Dr. Anthony Atala, one of the most influential biotech researchers in the world.

Psst: It’s no surprise that WFIRM is located in downtown Winston-Salem’s Innovation Quarter — a burgeoning mixed-use community known as a robust urban district of innovation where businesses, restaurants, startups, and the biosciences grow + thrive.
