Today we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The civil rights leader continues to have a presence in Boston. There are now two permanent tributes to Dr. King in the city: “The Embrace” monument at Boston Common and the “Free at Last” sculpture at his alma mater, Boston University, where King earned his doctorate in systematic theology in 1955.

Bonus: Don’t miss the “Roxbury Love Story” mural by local artists Rob “ProBlak” Gibbs and GoFive, which celebrates the neighborhood where he met his wife Coretta Scott King.

Here are a few things to do today:

MLK Day Open House at the MFA
Free tickets are available in person on a first-come, first-served basis and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Head to Druker Studios to create your own wearable headpiece or crown using wire, beads, and other embellishments.

2024 Cambridge MLK Day of Service
Lend your “helping hands” in Cambridge from 2 to 5 p.m. to help make blankets and scarves, sort winter clothes, and learn more about the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Visit a Zoo New England location
Have a wild day of educational encounters and keeper chats at the Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo, which both offer free admission today.

Boston Children’s Chorus Tribute Concert

We’re about halfway through Dry January, so here’s a new challenge to keep the sips coming. The Seaport neighborhood has created the Betty The Yeti Cocktail + Mocktail Crawl, a program that spans eight bars + restaurants serving a special Betty the Yeti-inspired mocktail or cocktail (if you’re more of a Damp January fan).

Bonus: For every Betty sipper sold, the Seaport will donate $1 to the Boston-based youth literacy nonprofit 826 Boston.

To participate, pick up a crawl card now through February from one of the participating locations, and get a stamp when you visit each stop. After your card is complete, you’ll receive a Betty beanie.

Find a Betty-themed sip at these places:
  • Borrachito Taqueria & Spirits
  • The Envoy
  • Flight Club
  • Kings
  • Scorpion Bar
  • Tuscan Kitchen
  • YOTEL
  • ZaZiBar

Swifties — this Somerville special is just for you. Backbar in Union Square will shake up your winter sips with Taylor Tuesdays.

Each Tuesday the bartenders will have two or three Taylor Swift-themed drink specials, like a “Shake It Off” clarified milk punch with a “sick beet” base or a “Bad Blood,” which is a twist on a Revolver cocktail.
