First look: Professional soccer stadium development in Everett

Since the team’s debut in 1996, our Major League Soccer team has shared a stadium with the region’s only professional football team in Foxborough. Now, we’re getting a first look at what The Kraft Group has in the works to bring the New England Revolution its own home turf.

The Kraft Group shared plans for the Revolution’s proposed soccer stadium development in Everett during a public hearing. Plans include re-zoning a portion of the waterfront to allow construction for the ~$500 million project.

Why does the team need it’s own stadium?
Today, the Revs are one of four remaining MLS teams playing in a stadium built for American football. Bringing a standalone stadium to the Greater Boston area has been a longtime goal for the owners — aka the Krafts.

This play could attract more fans for the 19-24 games each year and create a more authentic soccer experience by bringing seats closer to the field + establishing a space behind one of the goals for standing-room only. No final counts have been released, but the stadium could seat up to 25,000 fans.

Where will the stadium be?
The 43-acre property is a decommissioned power plant, which Wynn Resorts acquired last year. Located across from the Encore casino, it’s also nearby the Orange Line’s Sullivan Square stop. Current plans outline adding a dock at the stadium site for ferries going to and from the Encore Boston Harbor casino. Bonus: A new footbridge over the Mystic between Assembly Row and the Encore Boston Harbor casino is also in the works.

What’s next?
It’s too soon to talk about an opening date, as this project still faces years of legislation and multiple state and local permits before construction could begin.

Announced
  • The James Beard Awards have released the 2024 finalists, and Dorchester’s Comfort Kitchen is moving on in the Best New Restaurant category. Additionally, Cambridge’s Conor Dennehy from Talulla is a finalist for Best Chef in the Northeast.

  • Mayor Wu announced the second round of SPACE Grants, which will distribute $4,575,000 to 37 grantees. The local entrepreneurs receiving funding include AfroBeats Boston Dance, Democracy Brewing, and Nubian Markets. Applications for the third and final round are now open.
Sports
  • On Saturday, April 6, the City of Boston will celebrate athletes from the four teams that won State Championships this year. Join the teams for a parade beginning at 2 p.m. at Park Street Station that will end with a rally at City Hall Plaza.
Community
  • The Harvard-Allston Public Realm Flexible Fund is accepting applications for projects that enhance the public realm (think: improvements to public parks, neighborhood beautification, street furniture, and public safety projects). The deadline to apply is Monday, May 20. Learn more.
Plan Ahead
  • A bookish celebration is in order — All She Wrote Books is turning five and wants to celebrate the next chapter with the community. The queer-owned indie bookstore will host a party on Friday, April 19 starting at 7 p.m. at Connexion, 149 Broadway in Somerville. Guests can expect a book swap, live DJ, snacks, drinks, and party favors.

  • 2,781. That’s the record setting number of billionaires that are featured on Forbes’ annual list. The 2024 group is worth a collective $14.2 trillion and some call the Bay State home. Local billionaires include No. 58 Abigail Johnson worth $29 billion, No. 168 Edward Johnson IV worth $11.8 billion, and No. 188 Robert Kraft worth $11.1 billion. (Boston Globe)

  • Gov. Maura Healey will limit state government hiring in an effort to manage spending. From April 3 to June 30, all new Executive Branch hiring will need to be approved based on time-sensitivity and the importance of positions. (WBUR)
