Opening soon: 89 Charles

This Saturday, Sept. 20, a new cocktail bar will open in Beacon Hill. 89 Charles promises a spirited and intimate experience.

The beverage program led by Dave Irwin aims to reimagine classic cocktails alongside seasonal drinks and high-end wines — including a selection of rare and vintage champagne. I’ve got my eye on the filthy and espresso martinis + the Garden Fairy, made with gin, sherry, red bell pepper, basil, and lemon.

Also on offer: a rotating menu of elevated small plates from Chef Matt McPherson (no relation to yours truly).

When you think of fall in New York, you might picture foliage in Central Park, “When Harry Met Sally,” and lots and lots of crowds. Flip the script with a relaxing lakeside escape at The Lake House on Canandaigua.

Autumn is The Lake House’s best kept secret season. The resort’s beauty and opulent perks earned it a MICHELIN guide feature (read: top 15 best lake vacations in the world).

Book a trip to discover:

  • Fall foliage boat cruises
  • Winery tours and tastings
  • Crisp weather and fireside s’mores
  • Spa treatments and wellness classes
  • Fewer crowds than nearby leaf-peeping hotspots

Pro tip: Book a Fall Getaway package to score 20% off lakeview accommodations, plus two complimentary cocktails and a room upgrade.

The resort also boasts waterfront dining, a jetted hot tub, barrel saunas, nearby shopping, and endless outdoor activities among the fall leaves.

News Notes

Civic

Lower Bow Street in Cambridge — between DeWolfe and Plympton streets — has been closed to vehicle traffic for ~2 years. Following a vote by Cambridge City Council this week, it’s going to stay that way. Once construction ends, this block of Harvard Square will remain pedestrian-only + allow local businesses like Daedalus and Sea Hag restaurants to add more outdoor dining space. (Boston.com)

Number

33,267. That’s how many Boston Marathon qualifier applications were received last week, representing 116 countries + all 50 states. In 2025, approx. 66% of all applicants were admitted to the race. Learn more about the qualifying review process.

Concert

This October, join the BSO for a series of note-worthy performances. Hear the drama of Tchaikovsky’s “Fifth Symphony” and Copland’s classic “Fanfare,” journey through John Adams’ Violin Concerto with Augustin Hadelich, and soar through the melodies of Prokofiev’s “Second Piano Concerto” with Yuja Wang. See all showtimes.*

Talk about taking the cake. Brookline’s Clear Flour Bread was crowned the best bakery in Massachussetts by The Takeout. Consider this your sign to pick up one (or several) of their honey spice cookies before September ends.

Biz

Why are the same firms that backed Uber, Venmo, and eBay also backing Pacaso (Nasdaq ticker reserved: $PCSO)? Because it’s disrupting the $1.3 trillion vacation home market with co-ownership, already earning $110 million+ in gross profit in under five years. (And until midnight, you can join the 10,000+ shareholders.)‡*

Upcoming tariffs could spike prices on car replacement parts, making auto maintenance in Boston even more expensive. One way to offset those costs? An extended auto warranty. This provider is offering $300 off new plans. T&Cs apply; see disclaimers for important consumer information.*
