When it comes to sports, Boston has no shortage of teams to support. Our city is home to some of the most loyal fans in the country.

Whether you’re already a devoted Boston sports fan or you’re new to the area + interested in learning more about Boston’s teams, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the local sports scene.

🏒 Boston Bruins (NHL) | Est. 1924

The Boston Bruins were the first American team to join the NHL and have had multiple champions don the black and gold uniform, including Bobby Orr and Willie O’Ree.

Where they play: TD Garden

  • It opened in 1995 as a replacement for the original Boston Garden.
  • The 19,600-seat arena features three private restaurants, 90 executive suites, 1,100 club seats, a high-definition video scoreboard, and 360-degree LED technology.

Mascot: Blades the Bruin

  • Blade’s birthday is Oct. 1, and he recently celebrated his 22nd birthday.
  • Blade is one of a handful of mascots whose name coordinates with the sport.

Team colors: Black and gold

  • While the bear mascot might make you think of brown, rumor has it the franchise owner didn’t like the color.
  • The Bruins “Pooh Bear” jersey is part of the NHL and Adidas “Reverse Retro” program for the 2022-23 season. It’s an update to the original 1995 alternate uniform that featured the “Pooh Bear” logo on a gold jersey.

Major accomplishments:

  • On Nov. 20, 1928, the Bruins played their first game at the Boston Garden in front of a crowd of ~17,000.
  • The Bruins won the 1929 Stanley Cup over the New York Rangers in the first championship series to feature two American teams.
  • The local ice hockey team has won the Stanley Cup six times in franchise history.
  • Team Captain Patrice Bergeron is one of four Bruins players to reach 1,000 career points.

🏀 Boston Celtics (NBA) | Est. 1946

The team was one of the original NBA members and is considered to be one of the most successful teams, claiming legendary players like Bill Russell, Sam Jones, and Larry Bird.

Where they play: TD Garden

  • New England’s largest sports and entertainment arena TD Garden hosts over 200 events a year.
  • The arena is 755,000 sqft, located on a 3.2-acre development site constructed above a 1,150-space MBTA parking garage.

Mascot: Lucky the Leprechaun

  • Lucky has been part of the games for over 17 years.
  • The mascot debuted in-person during a Celtics game on Oct. 29, 2003.

Team colors: Green, gold, brown, white, and black

  • The primary green color was selected to honor Boston’s Irish heritage.
  • The current logo has been used since 1996 and features Lucky the Leprechaun in a brown and green vest and a black hat.

Major accomplishments:

  • The Celtics have won 17 NBA titles, including earning 11 in 13 seasons from 1957 to 1969.
  • Boston was one of 17 teams to join the new NBA in 1949. Today, the only founding NBA franchises still in existence are the Celtics, New York Knicks, and Golden State Warriors (previously known as the Philadelphia Warriors).
  • Last year, legendary player and coach Bill Russell died and the NBA retired his number. This season, all NBA teams will honor the legacy of No. 6 with special jerseys, events, and more.

Boston Red Sox (MLB) | Est. 1901

The Boston Red Sox are one of the most iconic teams in baseball history, and attending a game at Fenway is so good, so good, so good. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Boston team has a storied history at America’s oldest ballpark.

Where they play: Fenway Park

  • The Red Sox’ home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912, making the historic stadium the oldest in the MLB.
  • Fenway has a seating capacity of 37,755 people, which makes it the third-smallest stadium in the league.

Mascot: Wally the Green Monster

  • The green monster mascot debuted in April 13, 1997 and wears No. 97.
  • Wally has a younger sister called Tessie the Green Monster who joins him at games and parties.

Team colors: Red, white, and blue

  • Though they have one of the most recognizable team logos in sports history, the Red Sox haven’t always used the iconic red socks. The first logo dates back to 1912 and the original design featured a red sock on an oval background that had “Boston” written across it in white lettering.
  • The Sox sport the “City Connect” alternative uniforms featuring yellow and light blue to honor Patriots Day.

Major accomplishments:

  • The Sox have won nine world Series titles in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018.
  • From 1919 to 2004, the team saw one of the longest championship droughts in baseball history, infamously known as the “Curse of the Bambino” due to owner Harry Frazee’s decision to trade Babe Ruth to the rival New York Yankees in 1920.
  • The bronze “Teammates” statue outside of Fenway Park honors the Red Sox greats Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, and Dom DiMaggio.
  • The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is one of the most noteable in all of sports, dating back more than a century and over 2,000 games.
  • In 2022, David “Big Papi” Ortiz got the call from Cooperstown and was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

🏈 New England Patriots (NFL) | Est. 1960

Before they were known as the New England Patriots, the football team was called the Boston Patriots and they played at Fenway Park, among other venues. Once the team moved to Foxborough, they changed their name, and the rest is history.

Where they play: Gillette Stadium

  • The stadium is located outside of Boston in Foxborough.
  • It opened in 2002 and can accommodate 65,878 fans during the average sporting event.

Mascot: Pat the Patriot

  • Pat is a beloved character whose name plays on the area’s rich Revolutionary history.
  • The logo version of Pat wears a tricorne hat and a Continental Army uniform.

Team colors: Blue, red, white, and silver

  • The current “Flying Elvis” logo has been in place since 1993.
  • There are multiple uniform versions. Since Robert Kraft bought the team in 1994, the colors haven’t changed, but the names, numbers, and logo placement have all seen minor adjustments.

Major accomplishments:

  • The Patriots have won six Super Bowl titles in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019.
  • The dynasty team has also won 11 American Football Conference championships.
  • Head Coach Bill Belichick joined the team in 2000 — the same year Tom Brady was a sixth-round draft pick to the Patriots.
  • One famous game was the team’s fifth Super Bowl appearance, when the Patriots overcame a 25-point third-quarter deficit to the Atlanta Falcons in overtime. It’s now known as the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.

New England Revolution players celebrate at a game

New England Revolution (MLS) | Est. 1995

New England’s major league soccer team is one of the league’s 10 charter clubs.

Where they play: Gillette Stadium

  • The stadium is about 27 miles southwest of downtown Boston and offers plenty of parking options.
  • A special feature inside Gillette is the stadium’s 10-story lighthouse, located in the north end zone.

Mascot: Slyde the Fox

  • A mischievous yet compassionate mascot, Slyde is a fan favorite.
  • He has been known for his trash-talking with other mascots, even outside of MLS.

Team colors: Red and navy blue

  • The strikethrough on the logo symbolizes the spirit of defiance that resonates through the region and the team.
  • The club has a new icon, featuring a Heritage Tree that pays respect to the flag of New England.

Major accomplishments:

  • The Revolution have participated in five MLS Cup finals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2014.
  • They won their first Supporters’ Shield — the annual award given to the team with the best regular-season record — in 2021.
  • In 2021, the team set a new MLS record for earning 73 points in one season, surpassing LAFC’s mark of 72 set in 2019.

🏒 Boston (Professional Women’s Hockey League) | Est. 2023

The new women’s ice hockey league debuted a Boston team and is one of the six teams in the first-of-its-kind league.

Where they play: Tsongas Center

  • The Lowell arena is a multi-purpose facility owned by the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
  • It opened in 1998 and was named in memory of Paul Tsongas, Lowell native and US senator.
  • The arena has seating for ~6,500 guests.

Team colors: Black, green, and white

  • The inaugural season began in January 2024. The regular season, which is anticipated to end in June 2024, will be followed by a playoffs and final format.

🏈 Boston Renegades (WFA) | Est. 2015

Boston has a rich history of women’s professional tackle football teams. Cheer on New England’s current team that celebrates the legacies of former local teams, including the Boston Militia, New England Intensity, Bay State Warriors, Boston Rampage, and Massachusetts Mutiny.

Where they play: Harry Della Russo Stadium, Revere

  • The soccer stadium located at 75 Park Ave. can accommodate 2,250 fans.
  • The athletic complex cost $8.5 million.

Team colors: Red and black

Major accomplishments:

  • WFP Pro National Champions in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
