The Boston Celtics notched 61 wins in the 2024-25 regular season, marking just the 12th time in franchise history the C’s were able to achieve 60+ wins.
With the NBA Playoffs officially tipping off on Sunday, April 19, we want to see if history can tell us anything. What happened to the other 11 Celtics teams to hit 60+ wins?
1. 1972-73 | 68-14
This team, led by John Havlicek, is still a franchise-best, but they ultimately lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the New York Knicks.
2. 1985-86 | 67-15
Larry Bird led this team through both the regular season and playoffs, where they won NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets.
3. 2007-08 | 66-16
No fan will forget this season where Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen won 66 regular season games followed by the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.
4. 2023-24 | 64-18
New coach, no problem. Joe Mazzulla was in his first season as head coach and he had plenty of star power with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingas, and many more.
5. 1984-85 | 63-19
We’re sorry in advanced for bringing this one up as the C’s eventually were defeated in the NBA Finals by the Los Angeles Lakers.
6. 1981-82 | 63-19
Despite a strong regular season, Bird and company couldn’t get it going in the playoffs, leading to defeat in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers.
7. 2008-09 | 62-20
Then-head coach Doc Rivers had an electric team, but Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic proved to be too much, ending this season in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
8. 1983-84 | 62-20
This will always be a magical season as the Celtics went on to win the NBA Finals with Bird who had also just secured his first-ever MVP Award.
9. 1980-81 | 62-20
Another 60+ win season, another NBA Finals trophy. Cedric Maxwell was also named Finals MVP this season.
10. 1964-65 | 62-18
No Celtics list is complete without an appearance from Red Auerbach, and he was the head coach during this championship-winning season.
11. 1979-80 | 61-21
The 76ers were too much for Maxwell and the Cs this season as they were dropped in the Eastern Conference Finals.
