Making new friends is hard — even in an incredible city like Boston. Whether you’re new to town or just want to branch out and try something new, taking an improv class is a great way to meet people + build local community.

City Editor Sara (that’s me 👋) recently stopped by a Level 1 class at the Asylum CoLab. Here’s how the experience went, and how you can Try This.

What we tried (with pricing):

I stopped by a Monday night Level 1 course with instructor James Melloni, whom you might recognize from the Main Stage cast. The classes are an eight-week series, priced at $325 for 16 hours of expert improv instruction.

As the first class, we focused on getting to know fellow classmates and playing some low pressure games (including rock, paper, scissors) to get comfortable in the space.

What not to miss:

Don’t forget to take advantage of all that the CoLab shared space has to offer. There’s a communal kitchen with plenty of coffee to fuel up before class, plus a stage setup if you want to practice some scenes or stand-up.

The location couldn’t be better — it’s at Faneuil Hall (where American Eagle used to be).

Pro tip: Take the T to State, Aquarium, or Government Center.

What we’re still talking about:

How welcoming and supportive the class felt. I was pretty nervous before we got started, but after a few minutes I felt totally relaxed and ready to have fun.

This is an incredible way to branch out and make friends in Boston — especially since you’ll continue the course with the same people you started with.
