A collaborative Boston Spotify playlist

As the home of countless concert venues + famous bands like Dropkick Murphys, it’s safe to say that Boston has a pretty rockin’ music scene. We decided to turn the volume up and make a collaborative playlist for locals, by locals.

In this playlist, you will be able to add your own go-to tracks. We’ve added a few of our favorite Boston-themed tunes to help you get started:

🎵 “M.T.A” by The Kingston Trio — Listen to the musical tale of a man named Charlie trapped on our city’s subway system (called the Metropolitan Transit Authority when the song dropped in 1949).

🎵 “Dirty Water” by The Standells | The 1965 single paid homage to the infamously polluted Charles River. By the way, that dirty water is much cleaner now.

🎵 “Boston” by Augustana | This one’s for anyone who came to our city for a fresh start.

🎵 “Roadrunner” by The Modern Lovers | This love song to Massachusetts mentions Stop ‘n’ Shop and Route 128 + inspired the name of Brighton’s concert venue.

🎵 “Rock & Roll Band” by Boston | We’re big fans of this hit from “just another band out of Boston.”

Shout out to our readers for providing some amazing song recommendations, including:
  • “Massachusetts” by the BeeGees — Brendan S.
  • “Boston” by Kenny Chesney — Holly H.
  • “The Wellerman” by Nathan Evans — Jan M.
Plus, we couldn’t resist adding some of the low-hanging fruit. We’re looking at you, “Shipping Up to Boston” and “Sweet Caroline.”

Now it’s your turn. Create a free Spotify account (if you haven’t already), open the collaborative playlist, add the playlist to your library, and add songs that make you think of Boston.

Don’t have Spotify? Feel free to send us your recommendations + we’ll add them for you.

Note: Some of the tracks on the playlist may include explicit language.

Making new friends is hard — even in an incredible city like Boston. Whether you’re new to town or just want to branch out and try something new, taking an improv class is a great way to meet people + build local community.

City Editor Sara (that’s me 👋) recently stopped by a Level 1 class at the Asylum CoLab. Here’s how the experience went, and how you can Try This.

What we tried (with pricing):

I stopped by a Monday night Level 1 course with instructor James Melloni, whom you might recognize from the Main Stage cast. The classes are an eight-week series, priced at $325 for 16 hours of expert improv instruction.

Spoiler alert: I had a great time. I was pretty nervous before we got started, but after a few minutes I felt totally relaxed and ready to have fun.

Words cannot espresso how excited we are that today is National Coffee Day.

If you’re looking to get your local java fix, we recommend hitting the five locations on our official BOStoday Coffee Crawl.

📍 Gracenote Coffee, 108 Lincoln St.
The local coffee roaster’s small but mighty espresso bar serves tea, nitro cold brew + coffee beans in addition to a variety of espresso drinks.

📍 Kohi Coffee Company, 125 Summer St.
Just inside the lobby at 125 Summer St. (by the end of the Greenway), you’ll find espresso, coffee, and baked goods.

📍 George Howell Coffee, 505 Washington St.
Did you know that George Howell came up with the original frappuccino recipe and sold it to Starbucks? Naturally, we had to order “The Original” here for a sweet frozen treat.

📍 Ogawa Coffee, 10 Milk St.
You might recognize Ogawa’s latte art from your Instagram feed, and this is one of our team’s all-time favorite spots for remote work.

📍 Caffe Vittoria, 290-296 Hanover St.
Pro tip: bring cash, since like most spots in this neighborhood, the cafe is cash-only.

Editor’s pick: I’m a big fan of Buttermilk & Bourbon and Citrus & Salt, so it looks like I’ll have another cookbook to add to my collection soon. Chef Jason Santos is releasing “Simple Fancy” in December.

The celebrity chef’s new cookbook will feature easy weeknight recipes, which I’m always in need of.
