It’s almost time to get artsy in Eastie. The ICA Watershed begins its 2023 season this Thursday, May 25, and tickets are on sale for visits through Friday, June 30.

Here’s what to expect from the seasonal East Boston art space, housed in a 15,000-sqft former warehouse.

How do I get there?

The ICA Watershed is located at 256 Marginal St. within the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina (read: right next to Piers Park).

As the name suggests, the museum is located on the waterfront — meaning the best way to get there is by boat. Tickets for the Water Shuttle service from the Seaport are free for Institute of Contemporary Art members + included in the cost of general admission tickets.

The Watershed space is also accessible via the Blue Line to Maverick Station.

What’s on view?

The gallery hosts one exhibition each year. The 2023 exhibition, on view from opening day through Monday, Sept. 4, highlights a selection of recent sculptures and paintings by Guadalupe Maravilla.

Don’t miss “Mariposa Relámpago,” which translates to “Lightning Butterfly” and is the artist’s largest sculpture to date. The piece includes natural materials, handmade objects, and other items collected by the artist as he retraced his migratory route from El Salvaor to the US.

What else is planned?

We’re glad you asked. The ICA Watershed is hosting free events throughout the summer — here are a couple to check out.
  • Watershed Block Party | Saturday, June 17 + Saturday, Aug. 19 | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. | The parties with East Boston Neighborhood Health Center Project + Community Healing Project will feature Reiki demonstrations, a performance of Spanish folk songs, and salsa lessons.

Houston Boston, we have a new exhibition in town. If you have ever been curious about our neighbor in outer space, this experience was written in the stars for you. Blast off to the Museum of Science to explore the Mars Spotlight, which highlights what scientists have discovered from traveling to the Red Planet with a full-scale model of NASA’s Perseverance Rover, a larger-than-life Mars spinning around, and lots of lessons from scientists and other STEM professionals.

No spaceship is needed to land on Mars with the new Martian territory ready to explore inside the Museum of Science. Head over to the Blue Wing of the local museum to immerse yourself in the Red Planet.

What we tried:

There is a variety of on-site exhibits + live presentations, virtual learning experiences, and in-classroom activities, so everyone will moonwalk away inspired. While the planet might be light years away, the lessons learned from recent exploration have landed us closer than ever to taking the next big step for space travelers.

Make way for safer streets

Making Boston’s streets safer

To ensure that Boston’s streets are safe for everyone who shares the road, the City of Boston has introduced a new program called Safety Surge. These street upgrades will focus on three key areas for improvement.

🛣️ Speed humps

City officials plan to build 10 new speed hump zones each year —check if your street is eligible to get one. Of the ~800 miles of streets in Boston, 394 miles could be eligible for this program.

🛣️ Redesigned intersections

Expect 25-30 revamped intersections each year, designed using street safety tools for better sightlines, slower speeds, and clearer crossings. Curious how the intersections will be chosen? The city will prioritize areas based on factors like neighborhood demographics + proximity to community spaces.

🛣️ New traffic signal guidelines

Make way for pedestrians. People will have more time to cross the street in the updated guidelines, which will be implemented for at least 50 intersections per year.

I’m excited to check out an event or two at the ICA Watershed this summer. Calling all East Boston residents — what are some other can’t-miss spots + experiences in the neighborhood?

Feel free to share any and all recommendations. I’m moving to Eastie in September, and I’m already building my neighborhood bucket list.
