5 distilleries in Boston

Today is National Craft Distillery Day, and to celebrate, we want to raise a toast to the distilleries in our city.

Distilleries make hard liquors (think: gin, whiskey, vodka, rum + moonshine.) Much like craft breweries, these artisans offer tasting rooms and tours so visitors can try unique sips and cocktails.

We hope you’re thirsty — here are five to visit around Boston.

Chattermark Distillers
This veteran-owned business recently celebrated its grand opening for the distillery and tasting room in Charlestown. Stop by Friday through Sunday and sip on the “Charlestown Buck,” made with bourbon. Don’t just take our word for it — Chattermark was featured on Forbes’ list of the top American craft whiskeys in 2023 for its White Whiskey.

Short Path Distillery
The Everett business makes small-batch rum and seasonal gin. Kick off summer at the Summer Sipper party on Saturday, May 27 and celebrate the release of the Summer Gin with live music, new menu items, and a blueberry eating contest.

Bully Boy Distillers
This Roxbury distillery makes a little bit of everything with vodka, gin, whiskey, and rum offerings. The patio opens for the season on Friday, May 26, where you can sip the returning “Royal Colada” or a “Can’t Get There From Here.”

GrandTen Distilling
GrandTen has been serving up local spirits since 2011. Stop by this South Boston staple Thursday to Sunday to sample the cocktail list. There’s even an internal competition among the bartenders with drinks like the “Bury Your Cherries” or a “Oh Rickey You’re So Fine.”

Boston Harbor Distillery
This Seaport distillery has hundreds of barrels waiting to be sampled. Visit on a Wednesday or Saturday for the VIP Whiskey Tour or stop by on Friday or Saturday for live music.

The Barking Crab’s floating future

The Barking Crab has submitted a proposal to expand the waterfront restaurant with a new floating deck.

The Fort Point eatery at 88 Sleeper St. has requested to build a 1,900-sqft steel barge next to the connected docks to help increase the dining capacity.

The seafood spot currently seats thousands of customers in the ~9,500-sqft space at the outdoor dining area. The Barking Crab has been serving up lobster rolls, steamers, and other seafood specialties since 1994.

What would this expansion look like? According to the proposal, the floating deck would be topped with a metal-framed canopy support system and include self-contained restroom facilities.

The proposal will require a waterways license from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and the project will be reviewed by the Boston Conservation Commission.

Call us shellfish, but we hope to crack open a lobster or two on the water this summer.

From the editor
I had a recent visit over to Southie, and if you’re looking for a delicious bite to eat, check out Shy Bird’s ranch chicken sandwich. After that, stay hydrated with a cold brew from Castle Island Brewing, and pop over to the newly opened Petula’s for a pizza or cocktail. Then, end your neighborhood adventure with a sweet treat from Cannonball Cafe.

Tell me if I missed something from my South Boston itinerary for next time.
