James Beard Award announces the 2024 semifinalists

It’s like the Oscars for foodies — and we’re hungry to share all of the local culinary achievements.Yesterday the James Beard Foundation announced its list of semifinalists for the 2024 awards, which honor restaurants and chefs across the country.
The list is organized by best-of categories, individuals, and restaurants. This year the Bay State has a number of potential award-winning eateries and chefs on the list. Let’s take a look at the local nominees.
Best New Restaurant:
Comfort Kitchen, Dorchester
Coming up on the one-year anniversary of its opening, this Upham’s Corner eatery serves global comfort food that celebrates the ingredients and flavors of the African diaspora. The cozy cafe has counter service during the day and at night transforms into an intimate dinner experience with a full bar. Comfort Kitchen was also recognized on the New York Times’ Top 50 Restaurants List 2023.
Congratulations to all the local semifinalists. Save the date for Monday, June 10, for the James Beard Award Restaurant and Awards Ceremony, followed by a winners gala.

The Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement is accepting nominations for EXTRAordinary Women. The city’s team wants to spotlight these local women in newsletters and on social media. The deadline for nominations is 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Watch
This is not a drill — Tune in Saturday, Feb. 3 to watch Dorchester’s Ayo Edebiri on Saturday Night Live with musical guest Jennifer Lopez. Fingers crossed it will be Boston’s lucky day and we’ll also see Ben Affleck in a Dunkin’ skit.

No. 1. That’s where Massachusetts ranked on Care.com’s “Cost of Care Report” that identified the top five most expensive states for child care. The Waltham-based service placed the Bay State as the most expensive state to hire a nanny — averaging $899 for a 40-hour week — and the third-most expensive state for day care, averaging $372 a week. 4. That’s how many Celtics players have been named to the 41-player pool to compete for Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The roster includes Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White. The team will be trimmed down at a later date. (Mass Live)
Travel
Hawaiian Airlines is adding more flights from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu to Boston. The airline will add a seasonal flight on Thursdays from May 23-Aug. 1, which will total five weekly flights to the islands. (Boston.com)

Watertown’s Artemis Yoga is hosting an open house on Saturday, Jan. 27 with four free yoga classes, from Vinyasa Flow to Ashtanga. Sign up for a 45-minute session online.

Adrián Beltré is now a Baseball Hall of Famer. The former Red Sox player was voted in his first year on the ballot for the Baseball Writers Association of America’s Hall of Fame. He played with the Sox for one of his 21 seasons in the league. (WCVB 5)

Bay State electrician John King has become the go-to expert on motion-sensor technology after developing a system used to detect when a person has overdosed and has stopped moving in a closed space. According to records, 3,500+ people have been resuscitated due to the motion-sensor systems in health facilities across the country. (Boston Globe)

Budget breakdown for the Bay State

After filing the FY25 budget proposal, Governor Healey has outlined her administration’s priorities for 2024. The budget proposal would kick in beginning July 1, and would need legislative approval.
Here’s a by the numbers breakdown of the $58 billion budget plan:
$4.1 billion for the Affordable Homes Act to create middle-class housing, repair public housing, and create supportive housing for seniors, veterans + people with disabilities.
$30 million for a new five-year initiative called Literacy Launch to ensure schools, educators, and students through third grade have access to high-quality literacy materials.
$325 million for the state’s emergency shelter system.
$359 million in funding, which would double the operational funding support for the MBTA. The budget also includes a plan to use $45 million to fund a system-wide reduced fare program for low-income riders.
