Two Celtics players have been nominated for awards as players who are making a difference in their communities.
Grant Williams was selected as a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award . The power forward was selected for the team’s “Play for Justice” event that advocated to reclassify who is considered a juvenile in the justice system in Massachusetts.
No. 12 also contributed to the “Playbook Initiative,” a program to train high school students on how to safely intervene when they encounter discrimination. The winner will be announced during this round of the playoffs.
Marcus Smart was nominated for the Bob Lanier Community Assist Award for his support of pediatric cancer patients + inner-city student athletes.
His organization the YounGameChanger Foundation provided “Smart Carts” at Boston Children’s Hospital, which are mobile gaming stations children can use while receiving treatment. Vote for the Community Assist Award .
