We’re star-ry for not telling you sooner, but we’re letting you in on a secret — the Coit Observatory on Boston University’s campus hosts weekly stargazing events. That’s right, there’s no requirement to be a Terrier to get sweet views of the sky during Public Open Night.
These astronomy-themed nights, which have been held since 1967, allow the public to use powerful telescopes for viewing the night sky. If you stop by, you’ll even learn a thing or two from expert astronomers.
When:
Most Wednesday nights throughout the year, beginning at 8:30 p.m. during spring and summer months. Nobody will be admitted once the program begins, so be sure to get there a few minutes early.
Where:
These stargazing nights are held at the Coit Observatory, 725 Commonwealth Ave. (just above the university’s Astronomy Department). The stairwell up to the dome-shaped observatory is on the fifth floor.
Cost:
The best part? This is totally free. You’ll just need to grab tickets, limited to five per person, on Eventbrite. Psst — those become available on Thursday mornings.
Tonight’s event is sold out, so be on the lookout tomorrow morning to make future observing plans. Pro tip: Once a night technically sells out, the observatory will still admit attendees without tickets as capacity allows.
What about the weather?
We all know how New England weather can be, so call the information number (617-353-2630) no earlier than two hours before the scheduled starting time to be sure the event is still on. You can also check for updates on Twitter.
There you have it — the perfect plan for the next Wednesday night with clear skies. Here’s hoping that’s sooner rather than later.
