Black History Month events in Boston

Book up your February calendar with events from the City of Boston, Boston Public Library, and a film series to honor Black History Month.

Special discussions after some of the films will be led by the Museum of African American History’s historians.

Black History Month is in full swing and we have a few suggestions to get involved this month.

First up, catch a flick during the Black History Month Film Series that will feature five inspirational films selected by the Museum of African American History and and Showcase Cinemas. Participating Greater Boston theaters include Dedham’s Showcase Cinema de Lux at Legacy Place + the Showcase Cinema de Lux Randolph.

  • “Malcolm X” | Sunday, Feb. 11 | 4 p.m.
  • “Loving” | Wednesday, Feb. 14 | 7 p.m.
  • “Selma” | Sunday, Feb. 18 | 4 p.m.
  • “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am” | Wednesday, Feb. 21 | 7 p.m.

Then around the City of Boston, city officials announced programming to celebrate this year’s theme: “African Americans and the Arts.”
Black History Month Celebration and Flag Raising Program | Tuesday, Feb. 6 | 12-2 p.m. | Boston City Hall, Third Floor Mezzanine | Free | Head to city hall for remarks and a flag raising ceremony.

Sankofa : Selections from Songs of Free Men | Friday, Feb. 9 | 7-9:30 p.m. | Black Market, 2136 Washington St., Roxbury | Free | This celebration of the Black Diaspora will feature music in honor of James Baldwin.

The Melanin Roll | Saturday, Feb.17 | 12-3 p.m. | Chez Vous Skating Rink, 11 Rhoades St., Dorchester | Free | Register for a 90s night around the roller skating rink.

Black Veterans Appreciation Brunch | Saturday, Feb. 24 | 11 a.m.-2 p.m. | Prince Hall Lodge, 24 Washington St., Dorchester | Free | The City will honor deserving veterans with Community and Outstanding Service awards.

Finally, the Boston Public Library has booked up the rest of the month with free events. Check out the “Black is…” book list with 75 titles commemorating the achievements, complexities, struggles, and culture of the Black experience. Plus, a few author appearances and discussions.
